You have to realize that Jane's program is based on the same principle as basic training in the military. You *don't* show kindness, and a recruits best is barely adequate.

The whole *idea* is break down the recruit's sense of self (and other things) and rebuild him *your* way.

And it's supposed to bring the recuites together and make them feel like a team... the whole band of brothers thing. Charlene is not a team player.

and for all of you who think charlene is acting as normaly expected, when Stephanie was taken away, she volontarily came back. If Charlene was given the same chance, would she?

I can't remember any time when a big sister ever laughed at a student. the closest thing is when Darla laughed at Caitlyn, and that one incedent brought sweet little caitlyn to blows, throwning things and screaming. If a big sister laughs at a student it destroys the trust and the sense of brotherhood.

Close, like i said, but the big sis, and marie to a leser extent, ARE supposed to show kindness. Jane shows none so it makes the kindness they get from the big sis all that much more apealing. and since the big sis doesn't have any problems doing all of jane's torture, it makes jane seem less demanding and peer pressure and desire to fit in with the crowd does the rest.

Just try find one other big sis that asts like charlene does to tuck. i don't think there ever has been. Certainly not in any of Tigger's seasons stories.

I'm thinking that lawrence's seasons story should be droppped from the list since the feel is so unlike any of the others. I think it's flavored Aunt Jane in too many people's mind. OH YA! that's something. Does charlene call Jane "Aunt" yet? *Does a search* Only twice in chapter 3, and that seems mostly for Jane's benefit and is never done again.

In the first Tuck season, Tuck called her Aunt Jane. In "A Seaons of Terror" we learn about that term's importance. In all of the stories, it seems to, at least, be a way to toy with Jane, call her "Aunt Jane" when she's being nice, and "Miss Jane" when she's being mean. Kinda as a reminder by the big sis that she should be above the kinda thing that Jane is inflicting on her, without apearing to question Jane's athority.

In fact, basic training is finely tuned - you don't just crush the recruit's spirit with hopelessness. As you said, the recruit's best is barely adequate - but it *is* adequate, sometimes. The recruit must get the idea that by giving their best to do as they're told, they can (sometimes) be accepted. It should be hard, no question, and obvious outright kindness is probably not appropriate in a boot camp, but lack of punishment, special treatment ("boot sergeants") and so on serve to show recruits that their misery is their fault, because they're not behaving they way you want them to. If all they see is punishment, why should they behave the way you want them to? They'll be punished no matter what, so who cares? That's how Tuck is feeling now, and Jane should know that by now.

Perhaps the other people around should be providing it, but they aren't, yet, except possibly for Charlene.
