Amazon.com and Penguin Publishing are having
a first novel contest. It's limited to the
first 10,000 entries but the winner gets a
$25k advance against royalties and a contract
with Penguin to publish it.

Wouldn't it be a hoot if Ellen won?

Wouldn't hurt, I suppose. But it seems to me the lack of resolution would be a major problem, as would the question (if you look at the ad) of identifying just who the mainstream market for a book like this would be. There are, of course, plenty of coming-of-age tales out there and a legitimate audience for those, but Tuck's barely into questions like that in the early chapters.

One positive "end" to the novel would be the middle of Chapter 13, the (nearly) final mention of the revenge on Frank Donner on February 3. Perhaps a better one would be very late in Chapter 15, with Tuck back in school in homeroom on the morning of February 24; the advantage there is that we see a lot more of Valerie and the Pack, though several things (Jack, the band, Debbie's same-sex jealousy issues) open up that won't be resolved.

(Also, at that point Tuck isn't admitting to himself that there are any gender identity issues here, and it's hard now for me to guess how incisive a reader has to be to see the confusion ahead -- and whether seeing it is a good or bad thing if the story's being presented as a novel.)
