And another fine chapter it is! My only (small) complaint is that Tuck seems to be more of the "current day" Tuck, rather than the "pre-near death" Tuck of the earlier chapters.

Tuck uses an alias later in life and calls himself Jack Bauer, master of disguise, master of tech, and heals in minutes!!! Laughing

Actually, he is heavy on pain meds and surviving on Cokes. Since he hasn't eaten much since arriving at the Academy, Tuck will probably wolf down the planned lunch that Jane plans for her charges. I wonder at some point if Jane will take them to a Moroccan restaurant where the usual adventurous clientele eat with their bare hands and Janes dares them not to soil their clothes...sort of the Jane Thompson version of the Kobayashi Maru for the boys.

Aren't these pop culture references fun?

Question is: Is there such a restaurant established in the Aunt Jane Universe? Answer: No, there is not.

Spoilsport Cool

Seriously, IMHO this is the first reference to Tu-Val's singing voice - "a wonderful contralto" - which would be absolutely suited to a '40s torch singer (Mom and I have been listening to the "big Band and Swing" music channel on the teevee.) Knowing this I kinda 'hear' Val sounding like Shelly Stringfield from ER.

Well, back in 21:12 7 Mar (chapter 18, "Mind Tuck"), Travis thought Val's voice sounded like Kate Pierson's.

Don't call me Shirley. You will surely make me surly.

One more thing I caught: Tuck, like all correct-thinking people, prefers "Two Tribes" to "Relax" for his Frankie Goes To Hollywood listening.

What's fun to se is that Tuck is making Jane look foolish by following her orders. When she finally learns this, it will be fun to see Jane go quietly insane and Tuck take over.

Well, I'm pretty clueless wrt popular culture. Most rock "music" sounds like unintelligible screaming by people without any vocal talent accompanied by large blodges of rythmic sound.

Well, I might have overstated the case a little. Lemme go Giggle for a free audio clip....

Okay, I've gotten an idea about the pitch of Val's voice but I really hope she can sing better than that. Ick. "Without any vocal talent" seems to be descriptive.

Just my 2 Zorkmids' worth, of course.

Not an accurate representation of Kate Pierson singing since that was a sprachsung sample.

Here's her singing a duet with Iggy Pop, she starts about 2:00 in: http://www.truveo.com/Iggy-Pop-Kate-Pierson-Candy/id/3223066853

Okay, that's better. The instrumental part isn't too bad but I don't think the guy can very well (yeah, I'm a tough critic.)

It's easy to find other examples of her singing, just listen to the B-52s. She's the powerful alto/mezzo with the big range (for a rock singer) and the ability to sing falsetto, too. Cindy (Wilson?) is the soprano, making it ring when they do close harmony.

Fred (Schneider?) is the male lead, a natural bass/baritone who does the sprachsung thing to stay in the tenor range. In the other clip, Kate was doing something similar, though I'm not sure why since she can sing in that low end.

I agree with Kate Bishop, though - Val doing 40s torch songs in front of a big band, or in a bar with just a piano behind her would be something to hear. Too bad main-story Val is so hesitant to sing.

I don't think Val would want do 40's style torch songs seriously. Then convince her to sport a Veronica Lake hairstyle and wear a "Jessica Rabbit" dress with spiked heels. She'd end up looking like Jodie Foster in Bugsy Malone - an underendowed preteen in a cocktail gown.

Of course, at this point, if Tuck knew this would PO Jane, Val might do it. But doing it for Kate Bishop means doing it for Jane, which means a no go.

I had forgotten Val's lack of development at this point in the timeline. With serious enhancement and makeup she might be able to carry it off, but I think I'd rather see her in "age-appropriate" clothing.
