Mad My Laptop computer died the other day so I went shopping for a new one... I shopped everywhere and can't find one without a built in microphone and camera. Maybe I'm paranoid but does not anyone else see a problem with a camera on your computer? How can you be sure some one has not hacked it?

Worse yet how can you be sure that the government is not using it to spy on you? Shocked

If you're worried about the camera watching you, duct tape is your friend.

Seriously? If I were more tech savey I'd dig into it and physically disconnect both the camera and microphone.

I wish they at least had positive off switches like the mouse pad on my laptoy used to have...

Most laptops have some way to turn off the touchpad for a single, overriding reason, one that Apple touch-ideologues and fanboys hate to hear:

For anybody who can touch-type, they are a couple steps below horrid. They actively get in the way, they foster terrible ergonomic habits. They are so bad that *disabling* them is an instant sales win, for anybody who uses their computers to, you know, DO stuff. Even some hunt-and-peck typists learn to hate the things.

Cameras and microphones, however, don't get in the way nearly as much. Yeah, there are privacy concerns, but my guess is that offering a switch to disable them would end up costing the maker too much in terms of support costs. I mean, about a couple times a month I have some client who complains about their computer Wi-Fi not working... it's usually just a matter of flipping the switch on.

Don't call me Shirley. You will surely make me surly.

Remove the drivers. That tends to stop things dead. In the case of the microphone, if you need it sometimes, get somebody to make you a "dummy" mike that plugs into the external mike jack. It just needs to look like a mike electrically (probably a resistor of the proper value across the right wires in the plug will do).

Then again, if you have a cell phone, you *can* be monitored if the government wants to. They can have to mike enabled remotely, and when turned on (ie able to receive calls) they can be tracked, even if they don't have GPS (the location won't be as precise, but it's more than good enough for most purposes).

Embarassed Like I said I'm a very casual user of computers. I'm not yet worried about my cell phone Razz 'cause I don't do too much that would attract attention. Online however I'm here and a few other off the wall places that could be considered objectionable by one faction or another.

Laughing I had to find the wifi switch (in the software) for mine once or twice...

But the day after I bought it I decided that the mouse pad had to go! I will NOT buy a laptop that doesn't have a physical switch for the mouse pad at least! I may simply resort to the black duck tape solution though I really don't like it.

Fear the government they can convince your neighbors that feeding you to the lions will keep them safe!

If you can't disable it in bios (usually you can), then I'd take nail polish to the lens.
