A while back I said that Tuck downloaded a First person shooter game to practice shooting with. Given that this story is set in '98 or 99 or even 2000.... I get confused easily... What game would he have downloaded?

Oooohhhh... that depends. Back then, the Big Names were probably the Quake franchise, the Unreal franchise and Half-Life, with Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six and Team Fortress being also worthy of mention. But there were also a number of new arrivals, like Counter-Strike (technically a mod of Half-Life).

There's the matter of operating system, however. Although we do have canon evidence that Tuck is willing to have a Windows partition in order to be run Quake (he did practice for the Field Day Quake tournament, after all), his first love was always Linux. So, availability of a Linux version would be a good reason for him to choose one game over another. Quake has been available on Linux since 1999, I'm not sure about other games.

Don't call me Shirley. You will surely make me surly.

Tuck would have to have a Windows partition or several, in order to play games. And do cracking research. He might have several.

I'm just wondering which one has the most authentic 'gun' action.... 'Cause I think Val might be getting close to the money in her shooting competition.

None of them.

They all have a tiny tiny window on the action (= 'monitor'), they don't have anywhere close to the sound (or the non-players would complain bitterly), and the device one uses to aim is nothing like a real firearm. All the movements one would use in the game are exactly NOT what one would use in reality.

This is one of the things that drives me crazy about Those Asshole whining about videogame violence - it's nothing like real violence in approximately EVERY way. At best. At worst, it would teach very bad habits... which could be taken as the covert goal of the games, but I've never heard anyone else mention that.

The arcade shooters I've mentioned a couple of times were from memories of a particular sort of arcade game I dimly remember, which had an actual pistol-shaped thing with trigger, connected with cable to the arcade box. Much closer, though the monitor is still tiny, the action extremely cartoonish, and I suspect the resolution of the gun-pointer is very poor.

Well that answers that. I think then that what they will start looking at is either paintball or laser tag in their new paintball course....
