I wondered how Mike was coping with all the stress lately. =)

Mike's Dream

By Janet L

+++++

Mike fell onto his bed. This was just going on for too long
and he was seriously wondering whether he was going to make it.

+++++

FLASH TO ALL FLASH X TUCK HOME AND RESTING COMFORTABLY X NO CALLS
OR VISITS FOR 24 HOURS X RPT NO CALLS OR VISITS FOR 24 HOURS X
TSIXT END

+++++

Mike started as the phone rang. "Uh, hello?"
"Hi, I'm home," Tuck said, somewhat weakly.
"Yeah, I saw your Dad's flash."
"Um, I've been doing a lot of thinking, y'know, like I haven't
had a whole lot else to do..."
"Uh-huh."
"...And I've come to, um, a decision, and... Well, I have to
tell you first. Could you come over now?"
"Man, I'm beat. Couldn't this wait?"
Tuck's voice was very quiet, "Please, Mike?"
Mike sighed heavily, "Okay, I'm on my way."
"Thanks."

+++++

As he reached for the door, Sarah opened it and said, "Come
on in, Mike."
"Thanks"
As he stepped in, she shouted at the stairway, "Mike's here,"
and walked back into the kitchen.
He stood for a moment, not sure what to do next when he
heard a swishing sound at the top of the stairs. The sight of the
descending figure froze him in place, eyes bulging, mouth slack-
jawed.
Valerie walked slowly to him and reached out a hand to gently
close his mouth.
"Aw, c'mon, you've seen me in a dress before."
"T-T-Tu..." He swallowed hard. "Um, Valerie?"
The dress was a royal blue satin formal with a chiffon outer
layer, sleeveless with a scoop neckline, and flared skirt going down
to just above knee level. She twirled around and grabbed his hand.
"Don't you like it?" she grinned.
He took a deep breath and swallowed heavily, "Um, yeah... But,"
"Let's sit down and talk." She grabbed his hand and virtually
dragged him to the couch.
"W-what's happened to you?" he croaked.
"Well, I finally decided that it was easier to for me to be
Valerie. With my peculiar body chemistry it was gonna be really hard
to keep on with anything more than a poor semblance of masculinity.
"And I, um, got tired of fighting it. I'm still not all THAT
happy about it, but the other options all seemed so much worse"
"Ya know, when you were hurt, I was so worried I'd lose you.
And... and now..." His voice broke and he took another deep breath.
"Now, it feels like I've lost you anyway... Like you aren't you
anymore and someone else has taken your place."
"Um... Well, I think I'm still the same... inside... I
guess."
Mike looked into her eyes and gulped, "I... don't... know...
any... more... what..."
She put her arm around him and drew him close.
He shuddered and moaned, "Oh, Tucker..."

+++++

"GAAAAAAAAAAH!" Mike shot up in panic. He was sitting on his
bed, soaked in sweat. "Great Ghu!"
He shook his head to clear it. "Wow, if that's a sample of what
Tuck gets..."
After taking a number of deep breaths to clear his head, he
looked at his watch. *Time to go back to the hospital.*

+++++

From a deep darkness, Tuck began to be aware of himself. He
could hear a soft, constant beeping sound.
*Hmmm... Beeping... ICU...*
*Fingers, toes, teeth...* He moved his hands slightly. *IV...*

+++++

Mike looked closely at the still form on the bed. He'd
thought he'd seen some slight movement.
Mike held his breath. Something was different.
Tuck's eyes flickered open.
"Tuck..." Mike's voice faltered and it came out more like a
question. "I'm here, mano."
Tuck slowly nodded and moved a hand, <ICU?>
"Yeah."
<HOW LONG?>
"Three days, man."
<WHAT HAPPENED?>
"You were attacked, don't you remember?"
<FUZZY.>
"Well, let's not worry about that now... How're you feeling?"
<CHEST, GUT, HEAD HURT. THROAT SORE.>
"Yeah, you were beat up pretty bad. Concussion, broken rib,
internal injuries... You were a mess." His voice faltered, "We
almost lost you..."
Mike slumped over Tuck on the bed and started to shake. The
days of tension and uncertainty had taken their toll.
Tuck tapped his shoulder. Mike looked up...
"Hands," Tuck said in a hoarse whisper as he held his up.
Nodding in understanding, Mike took Tuck's hands and closed his
eyes.
As their psychic bond strengthened, the stress that had built up
over the last few days slowly faded away. Energies flowed like two
bodies of water lapping against one another, soothing each other,
intermingling, yet distinct, each filling and soothing the other's
hurts. Time and space no longer mattered.
When they finally separated, Mike said, "Thanks, mano."
Tuck managed a weak smile and said very quietly, "S'okay."
<TIRED,> he signed.
"Yeah, I guess so."
Tuck closed his eyes.

+++++

FLASH TOALL UPDATE X TUCK AWAKE RPT TUCK AWAKE X IN SOME PAIN X
SEEMS OKAY OTHERWISE X MEMORY OF ATTACK FUZZY X TFOURT END

+++++

"No, Mike," Tucker sighed, "I don't have ANY kind of formal
dresses or anything like that. What's the big deal?"
"N-nothing," Mike gasped, wiping the sweat off his face. "Gahhhh."
"I could get one, though, if you-"
"NO!"
"You sure?"
"Stopsayingshitlikethat!"

+++++

Thanks to Ellen for her help with this.

I note that you *ever* so carefully left it unclear *why* Mike reacted that way to the dream. Smile

I don't know; this seems pretty clear to me:

Perhaps it is because men are so visual rather than mental in their perceptions. . ie. pornography makes their day but women perfer a good romance novel. The sight of Valarie/Tuck in the gown being "real" rather than just part time shook him up. As it means an end to the "male bonding" as he knew it. Things can and do change but also remain the same. It is just a matter or Mike accepting and readjusting his perception of Valarie/Tuck. Perhaps Mike could possibly see it as the "death" of Tuck and here stands this vision of Valarie for real. Poor Mike is not quite adept with women. The percieved fear of loosing Tuck and fear of having Valarie full time could be tramatic for him. Mike is tough he will adept and overcome.

Thanks to those who left or sent comments. I really appreciate them.

There were three lines that I cut from the story, mostly at Ellen's suggestion. She felt, and I wasn't sure, that those three lines kinda stretched the nature of the Tuck/Mike mind link.

For the sake of argument, how would the story read if the following lines were inserted at the end of the conversation that occurs just before the second TWX (after "Tuck closed his eyes.")?

...
After a few moments, Tuck's hands started moving again.
<SO, DID YOU LIKE THE DRESS?>
Mike uttered a strangled cry and fell back into his chair.

+++++

So, how would this change the story?
Any thoughts on how much is actually shared with the mind link?

What do you think?

It may stretch the mind link capabilities established in the mainline story but it doesn't break them; it's just ambiguous enough to be explained as part of Tuck's confusion. Smile I like it.

I think it's probably less ambiguous but still consistent with this entry that someone pointed out here about a year ago, I think -- I certainly would have missed it otherwise.

I groggily get up, rub my left cheek *Damn that stings! Why does she aim there?* Embarassed

We seem to be crossing post subjects here with "What are Ellen's inspirations?"...Are we talking a variation of Duma's Corsican Brothers??? The Cheech and Chong's version or Douglas Fairbanks? Only Mike and Tuck weren't siamese.... Smug

Interesting speculation how tight Mike and Tuck might really be. It can define their future if Tuck wants to Val full time down the road. I.e. they can never separate if they're that much in each other's head.

Marginally related subject-
There was an interesting interview on telly this past Monday morning on ABC Good Morning America about identical female twins and TG. One of the twins, by age three wanted to be male, the other didn't. The female twin indicated she would "feel" her twin's emotional frustration (was suicidal), while she herself was happy with her own gender (Mormon upbringing, has about 6 kids now). The other is about to SRS.... This one has got the shrinks and other quacks totally confused about nurture vs. nature.

As I understand current theory (such as it is) on transsexuality is that it's congenital rather than genetic; that being so, it seems consistent that genetically identical people may have something different happen to them during gestation.

Well, latest theories I've read are that there is a non-controlling genetic component. Also, the difference between genetic and congenital is getting blurred, in that some genetic differences are happenstance of birth because of "markers" that get set or come unset, turning on or off certain genes. These markers are usually in the little tails on the end of chromosomes so that a pair of identical twins could easily have different markers set.

And of course, it's WAY more complicated than that! Laughing

I think it does misstate the connection. If nothing else, Tuck and Mike never talk about the connection with one another, as far as I can tell. They both know it exists, and they have made comments to others that might suggest it exists. (Mike mutters something about Tuck blocking him in the runaway episode, and Tuck does some grumbling in the Bikini Beach story.) But they don't discuss it between themselves.

Fun little episode overall, though.
