I was rereading some stuff and it ocurred to me... we have seen Tuck "cross-overs" with some other fictional universes:
- Tucky Season crosses with the "Seasons" universe (by the way, how is that going, Ellen?)
- BB: All Tucked Up crosses into Bikini Beach
- I remember seeing a Tuck/Spells 'R Us crossover story somewhere (maybe it was on Ellen's site).
- "Tuck Squared" established the idea of "parallel universe versions" of Tuck into quasi-canon (meaning, not canon for the Tuck Saga itself, but canon for the fanfics);

So, I wonder... what would be like the Whateley version of Tuck? He almost certainly would be a mutant (hell, the "regular" Tuck can be quite accurately called a mutant...). What would be his/her powers? (and no, s/he wouldn't be part of Team Kimba, mainly because Tuck is about ten years older than them... 1996/7 for Tuck, 2006 for Whateley, remember?)

Obviously the actual whateley authors may offer some greater insight but here's my quick take.

Given the age diff, you're absolutely right. Val can't be on team kimba(unless accidental time shifts are one of her powers bringing her forward into the story...hmmm plot thread!) I would envision her as similar to her position in The Taken. College level but available as a mentor. Maybe there's some sort of university level follow up to Whateley. Interaction with the school could be brought about possibly by introducing her as a friend of Sam/Hive given that she's the other established main character that's not on team K. Power wise super hacking is already taken by Merry and somewhat Hive. Although it would be interesting to see what different approach to it Tu/Val might take. OTOH, my mind keeps flashing back to the quick evil hentai powers discussion in the McAllen team colors thread here. Even just letting Val be a superficially nice(Sailor-ish) counterpart to Tennyo's Ryoko would be... interesting.

I've only read the first two weeks or so of Whateley, so I'm hardly an expert on the ground rules there. (Actually, from what I've read, I'm not all that sure there are any.) That said...

As far as powers are concerned, I'd guess that one would be the ability to shape-change between Tuck's XX form -- a fully female Valerie -- and his XXY -- a Tuck not too different physically from what we've seen so far. It might well be that only the Tuck form has strong mutant abilities. (Valerie, on the other hand, would be fertile, and able to write clear English papers.) I'm guessing that Tuck's continuing effort to create a fully male Eugene form and/or to take on a male reproductive role would have been unsuccessful so far, though possibly still ongoing.

Tuck's "chi bond" with Mike suggests that he'd have strong esper powers of some kind in Whateley's universe: certainly telepathy with close friends, possibly remote viewing. The "ribbons" Mike saw between them under LSD could imply conditions that'd give Tuck trainable abilities to use either (or both) ki forces or ley lines in the Whateley worldline.

Given Tuck's technical abilities and paramilitary mind, I wonder if super-villainy might become a serious temptation. (Bill Tucker's "Yo ho ho and nuclear extortion" might even work, given control over cosmic lines of force, Bill and Tuck's electronic wizardry and Sarah's propaganda skills...)

Two thoughts come to MY mind...

1) Just because Super-Being A has powers in one 'field', doesn't seem to indicate that Super-Being B doesn't. It's usually the case in stories, but authors are lazy (trust me...) and differentiating them by power is really easy.
So Tuck could still be a super-hacker. (Electrokinesis {GURPS} seems like a nice version; an un-nice version would be something like the Fusion power of Boomers from Bubblegum Crisis...)

2) If TUCK could pick, he'd probably be a 7-8 foot 'tall' (long) Deinonychus with a cybernetic interface, steel or better claws and teeth (silicon carbide? Buckystrings?), and some sort of armoring and backup systems. If he couldn't switch back, he'd start missing the social occasions within a fortnight or two... but if he couldn't switch back, it'd be too late.

And super-villany is ENTIRELY possible; especially the Mad Genius type rather than the Evil Eater Of Souls type (though it might be a bad idea to bother him when he's in Deep Hack... and a really terrible idea to do anything to Mike or his family).
Heck, I could see the whole family doing a sort of franchise thing, as sort of a family recreation, in between more conventional activities like writing software and dating and Sunday dinners and suchlike.

"Why," Valerie asks, "would I want to be NICE? I look GOOD in black."
"And you get to wear those pervy boots."
"Shut UP! Shit, have you ever tried to walk in those damned things?"
"Uh, NO."
"Besides, I'd have to wear something like 'em anyway, whether they were white or black."
"Hmmm... I think white spike-heeled boots'd make you look like a whore."
"And black ones wouldn't?"
"Nah. Then you'd look like a dominatrix."
"Oh that's a BIG improvement!"
"Hey, maybe you could be 'Lesbian Girl' and wear Birkenstocks and plaid shirts and things..."
"BAhahahahahahahaha!"

One more thing: a quick glance at Toni's origin story (I was checking on the description of "ki" there) notes that there's a connection to actual magnetism: Toni finds that the earth's magnetic field is a significant source of ki.

If that's the case, Tuck was correct, back when he was tested just after school started: an MRI field could definitely provide him with (or greatly enhance) super powers. He was just in the wrong universe at the time.

Some day I have to scan a button I picked up at a con a few years back.

Sailor Moon in dominatrix gear. And captioned "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress". Smile

SRU: Tuck and the Wizard is a fanfic by me. Smile It is on Ellen's site and also on BigCloset. After making a few suggestions for changes, Ellen commented to me that the last scene read as if I actually knew the Tuckers. Smile If I succeeded at that it is only because Ellen had drawn them so well.

Ah, the Callahanian response...

Don't blame me. Blame the Science Fiction Museum.

ps, speaking of Callahan's Place (and its successors) I wonder who'd be more freaked out The patrons or Tuck & company.

Oh dear. Amy lives on Long Island... Does she live in Suffolk County?

There's a question in your mind? Tuck&Co would be more freaked out, of course. Well, if anything, y'know, WEIRD happened. Or they met Ralph Von Wau Wau. Or similar things.

Contemplate Mike, Tuck, & the last slumber party at Lady Sally's, though.

Lady Sally could possibly give T-Val some good advice. if T-Val would listen.

But I do *not* want to be around if Mike & Tuck ever encounter the Lucky Duck...

The mind boggles. Equally(or unequally{value} but equally{entertainment}) dangerous combinations. Debbie and the Professor/Maureen for these nifty little business ideas. Erin and Tuck hacking the universe. Kim and Mary(and possibly several others) having a frank discussion on body and self image.

Amy's safe for the moment though, unless... Ellen any Tucker Family franchises opening up in Key West? ;P

Here is a new idea, what if Tuck and Mike were to be accepted into either Immigration Manor or Hayfield Hall? They both accept gifted students and T.G. kids. And Tuck qualifies. Mike would go because he is linked to Tuck.

After a bit of Deep Thought, I think that if anyone should gain further superpowers, it should be MIKE, not Tuck.

A terrifying concept also occurred to me at the same time: George, with the powers of Envoy from Wild Cards. [see the Wikipedia entry if necessary]

*chortling continuously* Mike and Tuck, at Whateley: Mike wearing a T shirt that says:

I AM AN
ANCIENT
WUXIA
MASTER

and Tuck's merely says:

SIDEKICK

possibly with a few ISO container symbols (No Hooks, Do Not Tip, Do Not
Stack...)

Oooh! "Deposit $500 MA IN OH RI VT" and whatever the other usual states are.

*chortle chortle*
