Anyone have any drawings or any URLs you think the rest of us should see for what you think Tuck or other story cast members look like?

Look for Maya Ibuki from the anime Evangelion.
2 pictures on the site that show tuck are of her.

The two pictures listed by Ellen are of Maya from Evangelion. I actually based my pictures off those pictures and some other anime style characters. I tried to make Tuck/Valerie a mix of Caucasian and Anime (pop asian) since Ellen never goes into too much detail on what Tuck/Val looks like.

I'm very bad to maintaining a stylistic pallete, so I'm sorry if I do some more pictures and the tuck/val depicted therein look different to the currently accepted "norms"

Well, I think you did a very good job on the two drawings on Ellen's site. I especially like the one with flipping the eggs. Smile That could be worked into cover art there.

The other drawing looks to me as if tuck and val are both carrying the same backpack which is sort of a cool symbolic view.

I'm still working on some drawings, I'm not happy with them yet, but, oh yeah. Smile Welcome to tuckerspawn. Smile

Erin,

Thank you! I would need some help coloring/inking the breakfast picture as the pencil shading job I did is pretty poor. I really need to practice with color too.

I was hoping to make some obvious and subtle ties between Valerie and Tuck in the other picture. Firstly, the title, and also with the backpack. It took me alot of tries to get the little similarities right, such as the facial styling and height. I'm too scared of messing it up to try and ink it though, but I do hope to do a higher resolution scan and cleanup, with maybe some digital coloring later on.

Thanks for the welcome, I like the crisp, clean design.

One of the subtlest things you did in the Tuck and Valerie picture is Valerie is smiling while Tuck is looking at her with an expression that doesn't give that much away about what he might be thinking.

And the other one all of the expressions are just right on for the scene.

**iWindoze l@_>@ks on in shock**

Those were *great* pictures!! Don't apologize
for your use of anime style, to many of us it
was that style that drew us to those pictures..
or at the very least it certainly drew me in!

Oh--and I agree with Erin, the subtleness you
used in the bookbag picture was great, I especially
liked the 'kawaii' look you managed to put on Val..

Nod By the way... I'm a pretty spiffy graphic artist... if anybody needs inking, of coloring work done on their blue line or pencil art, I'm available.

Maybe soon I send Ellen some Tuck art of my own Wink

Pacchi has invited anyone who wants to to download his drawings from Ellen's site and do inking and coloring on them.

I'm more of a painter and big-foot cartoonist and I'm REALLY slow at getting stuff like that started. I'd love to see anything *anyone* has.

Gende Bendte :

In regards to the colorization of my sketch:

That's a good job! I really like what you did with the clothing, especially the water-color feel to it. The color matching is pretty good to, similar to the sort of colors I'd have thought Valerie and Tuck would wear.

The facial highlighting seems to be alittle overdone. It seems to give too much contrast and make Valerie and Tuck's faces look too sharp. The reason I didn't add a nose, and left the features simplistic was to give it a brighter, slightly overexposed feel to it. I think Valerie's mouth should be varying shades of red to pink, maybe a hint of lip gloss.

I like the highlighting job you did with the clothing and hair though. I pictured _just_ slightly darker colors on Tuck though, but that's just me. I hope my criticism is constructive. Your work definately brought out a new angle to the picture I haven't seen.

Smile

Hi Pacchi,

Thanks... I appreciate the feedback... actually I had several problems with the tonality of the faces... I'll play a little more with them until I'm happy. As it turns out, I kept some of the underlying pencil shading (in the Val image), and combined with the tones I used, it produced too strong a shading effect.

I'd be better to strip out the pencil toning on the face and follow your suggestion with a more open look. In any case, I'm glad you liked the over-all effect. Oh by the way, I also agree with the darker hair for Tuck. I tried, but I was using a transparent layer for color, and then I realized I could just lay down another transparent layer of color under it to deepen the tonality... I might even give Val a slightly redder tone Smile

Keep in mind the facial shading I used is an anime sort of blush. You can decide to leave it out, but I think it might be nice to have a blush effect on Valerie's cheeks. I'm not sure giving Valerie a different hair tone is a good idea, considering the whole idea of the haircut being that it could switch easily between Tuck/Valerie mode.

I drew the picture with the more conservative Valerie in mind, sort of around the mid-20s episodes.

Please add a small "Colored by: <penname>" in one of the corners of the illustration so we can keep things organised Smile

They're on Ellen's website, Angel.

On the "Writings" tab, below all the Tuck stories before you get to "Other Things".

Yay, I got in some Illustrator practice. I absolutely LOVE the "Val and Tuck" picture, and I gave it some digital ink. I'll color it once I get my tablet. This is too much work for a mouse!

All we have to do is get some of the other characters drawn this well, and we'll be a few (hundred thousand) steps away from a Tuck animated series... Though for some reason I keep on imagining Tuck as like a WB New Tuesday drama series ^_~ I seriously think Tuck needs to be published in one form or another, some day--be it a serial in a magazine, or a TV show (yes, I'm dreaming, but it's such a good dream...). The story is just that good. It's definitely more than a niche story, it has broader appeal.

Thanks ^_^ That was a BITCH to do with a mouse.

Here's something originally posted in the "Printable Tuck" section, in response to Ellen's suggestion for the first book cover (where Tuck is looking at himself in the mirror, in the biker chick costume):

***

I'm sure I got all the details horribly wrong, but here's a sketch I did today of what said cover could possibly look like.

My notes/questions:
* Debbie's pose is very flat. I've NEVER drawn a suit before. So now I get to practice.
* No dog collar on Tuck! Oops.
* What does Tuck's bustier look like?
* How would Debbie have her hair styled?
* Was Tuck's wig long or short? I don't remember a style being mentioned, just that it was blonde.
* Does her suit have pinstripes? I don't remember the details.

This pic will be cross-posted in the drawings section.

Hey, I was thinking... after I color the "inked" version of the Val'n'Tuck picture, I think it'd be neat to put on a shirt, like on www.cafepress.com or something (lowest price, zero profit). What does everybody think of that?

A good thing would be to email Ellen as well rather than just asking here.

Also, the pic of Val in biker chick mode has a high cut top. If I remember correctly, the biker chick outfit had a bustier top showing cleavage. Tuck was massively worried about that at the time, if you read back Smile

I quote "What was on the bed, was a motorcycle-style black leather jacket, a bustier thing with embroidery on it, in black, a black leather miniskirt which looked way too short, and fishnet stockings. In black."

Really good pic though Smile

Heh, yeah. I'd pass out from joy if somebody else actually wanted to WEAR something affiliated with a story I've written, but that's just me ^_^

I'm getting all my friends hooked on Tucker, one by one (yes, even my straight, non-gender-queer friends *evil grin*), and I know I'm not the only one that'd want a Tucker shirt!

ellen used to have her own t-shirt design that you could download, print out and iron on to a shirt. i think ellen might go for a tuck t-shirt if it's a simmilar thing. do it yourself, and totaly free.

I have no problems with a T shirt design of Tuck, AS LONG AS it is basically released as 'freeware' - i.e., nobody gets exclusive rights to produce it and nobody profits a lot from it. So don't set up a Tucker T-shirt business unless you want me to move into your house. =) Also, I think this falls under the 'derivative works' license, which means I want a copy (electronic is fine) and I get to put it up on my website, which you may remember is free...

Ellen,

Oh, not a problem. I was gonna set it up at CafePress for zero profit. You could even make your own account or something to put it on, or I could give you the password for it, I don't care. I just want the damn shirt ^_^ And I'm too lazy to go shopping around at local t-shirt places. I know CafePress has OK quality prints.

Actually, I'd like it more--if we DID set up a cafepress thing--if the account was under your e-mail. I already have my own account there (heh, one design you might like in particular--http://www.cafepress.com/effoff), and adding the Tuck thing under my account would just confuse me next time I checked in. Plus, the way my mind works, I'm going to come up with other designs (it's something I like to do), and so to have the Tuck stuff on its own account would just be easier.

Heh, I understand your waryness of someone starting any kind of "business" or money-making scheme around your precious baby, but that's definitely NOT my intention. I just LOVE Tuck to death, and I love making things like this.

You'll definitely get a copy of the final image, as will Pacchi if she wants one. It'll most likely be around 8x10, 200dpi. Maybe a little smaller.

* Btw, Pacchi, I'd need your permission on this one too. It's your original drawing, after all.

What would the shirt design be like? Perhaps
have the OFFICAL Ellen Hayes logo (the original
T-shirt pic) on the front in a reduced size over
the breast and an overly large pic of Tuck\Val
on the back? That way older fans of Ellen who
were around for the original T-shirt would see
it and and be able to identify that it was a
Ellen Hayes related thing without people Who
Should Not Know What You Do In Your Own Time
being able to find out? I know that I'd love
to have a shirt like this myself, but I'd hate
for my parents (strick Bible belivers) to know
about it...

BTW: What do you think about making this quote
by Jack the logo under neath the picture?

"If it's trying to look like a duck, call it
a duck and it'll love you forever."

Sorry for the late reply,

Changeling Jane :

Great inking on the Tuck/Val picture, impressive, and there seemed to be a transparency effect where you could still see tinges of the pencilwork, making it a softer image, not very harsh. I like the fold work in general too, on the skirt and the pants, though they look wrinkly, which was a look I hadn't envisioned before. Good job!

A T-Shirt would indeed be very nifty, though I couldn't wear it to work because of the darned dresscode. I'd probably print mine on a large overshirt and use it as a nightie. I tend not to wear white since I look really bad in it. The drawings available so far might work really well in black if there was a round/oval patch of white printed with them as a background, with pencil-sketch, or frayed-cloth looking edges.

Again, sorry for the late reply, my life has sort of picked up pace. Smile

w00t, I got my tablet, finally, a day late. I'm requesting my shipping charges be refunded, I paid $15 for 2nd day air!

Anyways... I'm falling in love with it as we speak... I'm fiddling around and learning some techniques for photoshop, painter, et al. Expect some nifty full-color Tuck art in the near future! Muhahahaha!

Here is the Val 'n' Tuck pic, colored, submitted for everybody's approval. I used the colors from the previously posted color pic--Pacchi said they were close to what she envisioned, and I didn't wanna go screwing things up ^_^

This is a possible candidate for a Tuck t-shirt, and is a screen-resolution version of a print-resolution image. The final image that will be used to print will be at 300dpi, and will be uncompressed (ie. no JPG noise).

If there's anything that you think needs to be fixed or could be improved, let me know.

Love it. Like all good inkers/colorists you have added to the original without subtracting anything.

That sounds like fun, I too happen to have a digital tablet laying around with some nifty Paint programs. . . so it is agreed that the characters are in anime style. . . now we need to define each character in not only physical characteristics but personality as in the way the character is posed and dressed. Ok what do I know I am just a girl form Texas. . I attached an old image I created, do you think my work is good enough ?

Vicki,
I am not an artist, so what I am writing is just my opinion. I like the expression. It is the clothing that seems wrong. I just cannot imagine any of the girls of the Pack wearing that outfit, in particular the skirt. Perhaps the top as that seems to be the style for some. As to your work I personally think it is good enough.

I don't think she meant for the pic to be of anybody from the story, she was just asking if her artwork was high enough quality to contribute to character design ideas.

That's definitely a well-drawn pic, btw ^_^

Nobody should get ahead of themselves and think that any of this will become official--let's just have some fun throwing ideas around for now.

So true the picture was created ages ago and it was not meant to represent Valarie or anyone in the Tuck Saga. It was merely a sample of my artwork. I do so enjoy throwing around ideas and concepts making use of *what if* and putting it onto paper in either images or words. That picture by the way was made on an Amiga 2000 ages ago with software and a digital tablet that by todays standards is almost laughable. I have much better toys at my finger tips now !!

Don't laugh too hard those early machines
were worlds ahead of anything the X86 world
could throw out at the time and they achieved
wonders, especially considering that the Amiga
was able to push 24bit and 16bit color at a
time when the average PC user was thrilled at
having 16 colours running on their moniter...

I like the quality of the drawing. Very anime. Love to see some drawings of the other characters. Or more of Tuck/Val.

For awhile there, the Amiga was the best thing to use for broadcast effects CGI, at least below the hundred-thousand-dollar SGI level, wasn't it? They had that Amiga package called the "Video Toaster", that came with Lightwave, a character generator, a keyer and like a bunch of other video editing stuff.

Anyways, I've done another Tuck sketch, and once again without intending to! It's invading from my subconscious ^_^

I finally went out to a club, with one of my friends last weekend(this was my *first* time going out anywhere like that!), and enjoyed myself quite a bit. It was a predominantly gay/lesbian club, and they had a drag show before they opened up the dance floor (neither me nor my friend knew that that was on the night WE went! it was fun, though). I got a free CD from there before we left, which had most of the music they'd played on it. I'm now addicted to two songs in particular: "Addicted to Bass" (Puretone), and "All The Things She Said" (T.A.T.U., the two girls that pretend to be lesbians for their image ;p I like the song despite their fakeness).

So tonight I was drawing, and decided to draw some dance poses. And then, of course, the image of Tuck dancing at the gay club popped into my head. I didn't draw the whole scene (maybe later), but I think this quickie sketch turned out very nicely.

Big story for a small sketch, I know. Must be the cold medicine, I always ramble when I'm partially sedated...

Heehee, one more for tonight, since I can't sleep! Could it be a still shot from the "upcoming HBO series, 'Tucker'"? *giggles* ^_~ I bet you can guess who the two are in the picture (well, ignoring the filename giveaway)!

Poser 4 is a great program, and I'm learning the ropes of it now. This render is using the models and textures that come with Poser (I'm not much of a modeller... yet), with a pose and background of my own. It uses Poser 4's "sketch render" feature. After rendering it there, I touched it up a little in Photoshop. The new Poser 5 is even cooler, I might upgrade...

There's also this neat little program called Mimic, which automatically generates lip-synch animations (including eye and head movement) for Poser characters, based on a WAV file and supplied text. Now if only I had the modeling skills to create fascimilies of the story's characters... ...Hey, what can I say? Dreaming is my strong point ^_^

Very nice. If Val looked like that in the club she would have had a lot of really confused people watching. Smile Nice ambiguity.

Interesting. I like your sketches better but this has possibilities and a real good first effort with an unfamiliar tool. Smile
