Erin mentioned an argument in chat, but neglected to mention the place. Where are you people hiding and talking about Tuck?!?

sorry about that. i was still logged in but had taken a nap before my class. oddly enough the channel seems to be most busy at about 3:00-6:00 in the morning, eastern i think. but if you set a time to be there, i'm sure there would be a gathering. i know i for one would be there.

That's great. But where? IRC? What server and what channel?

Kate E. set up an IRC channel for #tuckerspawn on the following servers:

irc.linuxgrrls.org:6667
irc.fuzzle.org:6667

I frequently check in there between 9pm and 11pm in the evenings, and sometimes at other times.

I recently installed mIRC but I am totally ignorant on the proper way to set up the "channel" how does one type it in so you go to the correct place, please. I put it in just as you have it written (#irc.linuxgrrls.org:6667) and no luck.

Perhaps if we could set up a certain day and time umm say once a week maybe. . .

The server's up all the time. Myself and KateE are nearly always logged in there (as the server is actually in this building). one or the other of us is likely to actually be around from 09:00 to about 23:00 GMT most days for further technical help. Even if we don't appear to be around, feel free to talk amongst yourselves. Smile

Erin, I've been online most of the time since I actually caught up with the story last Thursday, don't think I saw you come on. Doragoon's been around though.

OK, some detailed instructions for a number of clients.:

Mozilla/Netscape 6/7 http://www.mozilla.org/ (has an IRC client included):

This one's the easiest: Click here: irc://irc.linuxgrrls.org#TuckerSpawn. You'll be asked to supply a nickname on entry.
Alternatively click on the "Chat" button, or the "IRC Chat" option in the Window menu, and in the new window, type:

/server irc.linuxgrrls.org
(wait for it to join)
/nick (your-nick)
/join #TuckerSpawn

mIRC http://www.mirc.com/ Really annoying Windows IRC client that doesn't just let you type commands and get on with it:

Once mIRC is installed, in Internet Explorer click here: irc://irc.linuxgrrls.org#TuckerSpawn. This seems to work, although it opens a spurious window on the nonexistent channel "##TuckerSpawn" as well as the proper "#TuckerSpawn".

Failing that, to use mIRC to connect without Internet Explorer you need to add the details of the server to your list of servers in the "Connect" part of the "Options" dialogue. Hit "Add" there, and fill it in with Description: LinuxGrrls, IRC Server: irc.linuxgrrls.org, Port(s): 6667 (default), Group: ButterflyNet. No password is necessary. Click OK, then you can select it in "Connect", supply a nickname, real name and email address (if you haven't already), then you can click on "Connect to IRC Server". After it's connected you should be presented with a "Join" dialogue, in which you can type #TuckerSpawn and hit "Join". Then you're in. After the first time mIRC will have remembered your settings so it should be easier to just select what you want.

XChat http://www.xchat.org/ What I use. Also available on Windows:

The first time you run it you'll see a server list window. You can enter the server details here and then select, but to get going quickly, check "No server list on startup" and close the window. Run XChat again, and you'll be presented with a normal command window. In that, type the following:

/server irc.linuxgrrls.org
(wait for it to join)
/nick (your-nick)
/join #TuckerSpawn

Trillian http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/:

I'm not going to talk you through the registration stuff, except to say, when it asks for "Configure IRC" during first setup, just fill in some sensible information. Your nickname, an alternative should your first choice be taken, a username (probably your username on your computer), and your full name in "Description". If you don't know what the IDENT daemon bit means, leave it.

Once Trillian itself is running, open the Connection Manager (Click on the world button, go to Connect->Connection Manager. In "Pick Medium", select "IRC", then under "Select a server to use when connecting to IRC", in the "Servername" field, type "irc.linuxgrrls.org". Click on "Connect". Now the little connect button (there are five buttons, IRC is the middle one) will be solid. Click on it and select "Join channel" from the menu and type "TuckerSpawn". You should be in, but I found that the Trillian user interface tried to fight me the first time I ran it, I had to quit and restart and then it seemed to be happier.

irssi, BitchX, ircii, any other console-based IRC client or any other client that lets you type commands::

/server irc.linuxgrrls.org
(wait for it to join)
/nick (your-nick)
/join #TuckerSpawn

As you can see, there's a consistent pattern here: any IRC client that lets you type commands in will understand the commands given above. Any others will have a concept of a "Server" somewhere in its User Interface, which you should supply as "irc.linuxgrrls.org"; a Nickname, which is how you want to be known, and a Channel, once you're joined, which is "#TuckerSpawn".

Why not post mutually beneficial time's when one or more English speaking countries would available (and may be there). Whilst I'm not discounting non English SP countries here, the bulk of the traffic I think would be within these times.

Agree with you on all that; unfortunately
I (and I suspect waaayy too many other people,
given the way my iNet circle has shrunk lately)
have begun to be a little selective on how
much internet time we can get due to financial
problems...once I get some cash together and
have my hands on another 24/7 connection again
I promise I'll be there to keep you company!

Inquiry: is an IRC channel still being run and populated, even after all of this time?

Unknown. The last X times I went to the channel, it was populated only by zombies - people who were maintaining a client tuned to that channel, but not actually watching or participating or anything. I have better things to do with my CPU cycles and modem bits than that, so I left within a few minutes.
Personally, I have moved very far away from chat/IM/anything live, and it seems to me (which may be very very wrong) that the world in general has also done this...

Server's still up, at irc.strangenoises.org or irc.talsever.org, but the channel kind of died of disinterest. Never enough people on it at the same time talking to give it a heartbeat. Would have no objection to hosting it again, especially given the planned merger of our network and Cyberbrats (where #gabyzone is hosted too), but I don't hold out much hope that it'll gain critical mass this time around either.

I'm more into ponies these days anyway. Ponies are cool. In fact, about 20% cooler. Cool

People seem to prefer asynchronous communications now days, which is a bit of a shame but does make it easier to chat if you both don't have to be there simultaneously. I tend to use chat just with individuals and even then its rare, messages and emails are usually more convenient.

I suppose asynchronous communication does have its advantages. It just seems as though the world is in danger of losing something from the good ol' days if this keeps up (the IRC channel I've been hanging out in recently died...).

That, and it feels like I'm the only one who hasn't jumped on the Ponywagon... Sad

I never got into any chat scene that had enough traffic to be interesting. I do feel I have missed a bit of geek culture with finding the net relatively late. Then again my family only got a modem around the time of Tuck so its not too surprising.

Anyway on the more serious matters of ponies - not jumped on the pony-wagon YET. I expect I'll get sucked in at some point as I like good children's cartoons and MLP:FiM is supposed to be very good.
