There have been hints that Tuck's been spotted by other students while out as Valerie, and the question becomes not if, but when, he's going to get caught by someone he knows that isn't going to take it as well as Anne-Marie did. So, some speculation about the event.

Where and when: Episode #150, while at Westcross Mall with Stella. Momentous things seem to happen to Tuck when these factors combine. See #50, hooking up with Travis, and #100, Sarah meets Valerie. The ideal date for Screwing With Tuck's Head would be the Friday that Christmas vacation starts, so that he has two weeks to stress himself out. Of course, we're still a ways away from that, both in story and real time.

Who: Ideally it's someone who already dislikes Tuck, and is female. The threat should be psychological, not physical. If it's one of the football goons, or maybe Tom Lenich, Tuck wouldn't make it out of the food court.

Our candidates:

1) Mrs. Vangormer. She's by far Tuck's least favorite, and she would probably enjoy tormenting him.

2) Danny Linehart. There's a precedent for Tuck running into her at the mall. She doesn't seem to actively hate him, but something like this would be too good to keep quiet about.

3) Ashleeee, Shannon, or one of the other evil cheerleaders. Despite recent setbacks, the cheer clique is still at the top of the high school social order, and the fact that it would throw a monkey wrench into the court proceedings is just the kind of twist Ellen loves to throw at us. If Jody is there and witnesses the event, she might give Debbie a heads-up call.

4) That Bitch Tina. Not content to grind up the hearts of both Tuck and Mike, she would probably enjoy letting the whole school know about Val, and sitting back to watch the carnage ensue. In fact, there might be a way for her find out without seeing Tuck, if we find out that Wayne Upshaw, who she dumped Tuck for at Homecoming, is perhaps Cindy Upshaw's nephew on her husband's side. We haven't seen the Upshaws since Cindy told Beth Parker, but a run-in with Val could convince her to leak the big secret.

Or it could be nothing like this. Ellen may have the scene written already, waiting to drop it in when the time is right.

Discussion?

Sounds like fodder for a speculative fanfic. Smile

If it was to happen with vanGormer, I fully expect the principal to get "creative" in finding ways to make her regret it.

In fact, there might be a way for [Tina to] find out without seeing Tuck, if we find out that Wayne Upshaw, who she dumped Tuck for at Homecoming, is perhaps Cindy Upshaw's nephew on her husband's side.
Interesting (possible) connection -- I caught one or two other name duplications, but not that one.

Trouble is that Tina obviously dumped Wayne a long time ago, since she hooked up with Mike long after that. And people who have been dumped by Tina, judging from Tuck and Mike, aren't eager to get back together with her.

So even if Wayne finds out -- and if Cindy's been spreading the information around after Beth (presumably) warned her that Debbie and Mike might pursue the matter, then she deserves to be fired -- there's no reason to think Tina would come up with it.

(The Tuckers figure to spend most if not all the holiday break camping in the snow in New York state and celebrating with the extended family on Long Island. That certainly doesn't mean the ax can't fall the day before the trip, but hopefully there'll be distractions for Tuck while he's gone, and not as much stress on him as you suggest.)

Actually, I can see Tuck staying home this time. There are several good reasons for it. For one, his ribs aren't going to do well with the load. And for another he may *still* need to catch up on his rest by then.

Not to mention catching up on his studies... (is the school going to run makeup classes during the holidays?)

Given how unsympathetic Bill and Sarah were when Tuck complained about being tired before the camping trip in August, not to mention their penchant for throwing his plans to stay home and rest out the window by agreeing to his friends plans to take Tuck out for 'a night of fun' without consulting him in any way, I don't think he's going to get out of the trip.

I do not think that Ellen would go that route because that would cause too big a change in her story. Now if Tuck transitions to Valerie, THAT might become a part of the story, but I doubt it because it is too much fun having Tuck switch identities. Maybe Tuck can have a melt down where he can't choose who he is.

Changes in Tuck's story are sort of the whole point of this. (Not that everybody's eager to see them happen -- see Sephrena's comments earlier about the story getting more depressing since the new school year started.)

Ellen made it clear years ago -- remember the note that accompanied the first two Pink Floyd chapters -- that this isn't a mindless upbeat episodic-adventures-of-a-TG-character tale. (FWIW, I'd suggest that Maddy Bell's Gaby comes a lot closer to that description.)

Tuck and his circumstances are changing. So are his mindset and self-image. Tuck's continued development, physical and mental, will inevitably lead to further crises -- and it's not at all unlikely that getting outed at school will be one of them.

Well, if that does happen, then I think that something like what happened when Tuck was attacked and dressed as a cheerleader is very possible except that i believe hat there will be a fight where Tuck and Mike are fighting off the goons until security arrives and Bill Tucker takes action. Whether or not to pull Tuck and his friends out and home school or transfer to another school is unknown. But then Tuck could always frag the goons with some of his nasty devices.
